Technology makes our lives simpler but in order to make our work comfortable, we ignore the safety of the environment. Do you know that some toxic materials are also used in making them, which are harmful for your health and also pollute the environment? We have now become so accustomed to these technologies that we cannot stop pollution but we can reduce it to a great extent. One of the best ways to do that is by doing green computing.
What is green computing?
The term Green Computing is made up of 2 words. Green means ‘environment or nature’ and computing means ‘to process’. Green computing is a study/practice in which computer related devices are manufactured, designed, disposed and recycled in such a way that there is minimal harm to the environment. For example, under green computing, such computer devices are made which have less radiation, less electricity consumption, and can be easily recycled or reused after their use. That means computing without harming the environment. We can also call this green technology.
Why do green computing?
We know that computers are increasing day by day. And to utilize the computer resources, natural resources are used somewhere. Such as raw material used in manufacturing of computer, electricity to start the computer and use of natural resources to dispose of the computer etc. But all these causes direct harm to the environment. So, green computing should be done to utilize computer resources effectively so that there is less harm to the environment.
- Cost and electricity will be saved.
- Beneficial for the environment
- To stop global warming
How can we implement green computing?
Recycle E-waste: Recycle E-waste keeping in mind the government rules. The manufacture should also provide recycling facility to the customer after selling the goods. This e-waste is the same electronics that you use daily in your home. Which either get spoiled with time or are not used. You can also hand over this electronic waste to a certified e-waste recycle, they will recycle them and make them reusable like new. You can also donate your e-waste to NGO’s or rural schools. Where they can be reused well because there are children and women Who are willing to learn computer skills, who can learn by using them.
Energy Conservation :
You all must know the importance of energy. Every person in this world is using energy, more or less. It is not possible to do anything without energy. You all use TV, refrigerator, cooler, fan appliances etc. in your daily life. But do you know? A large amount of energy is consumed to run these devices. Along with energy consumption, we should also pay attention to energy conservation. So that there is enough energy for our future generation.
Energy conservation means that whatever energy we have should be used in such a way that less energy is consumed and maximum savings are achieved. We call that energy conservation. Since 1991, World Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on 14 December in which the importance of energy is explained to the people and new policies are made for energy conservation. Also, people are made aware.
Develop thin client strategy
The thin client strategy includes the use of:
- If possible, instead of using desktop computers, we should use notebook computers.
- Printers should be turned off when not needed.
- It is better to use LED monitor than using CRT monitor.
- Modern LED lights should be used instead of bulbs. Because LED lights consume less energy than bulbs.
Future of green computing
There have been some recent advances in green computing as new technologies continue to appear in the world. By the way, technology is also eco-friendly. Some manufacturers may not produce environmentally friendly products because they may find themselves losing market share as customers become more aware of the impact they have on the home. The future of green computing may be seen to be a combination of three basic areas of concern. Manufacture, use and disposal.
Recent implementation of green computing:
Blackle: Blackle means, it is an energy saving feature by using black screen to search Google. Do you know? A white Google search page uses at least 74W and a black one uses only 59W.
Zonbu Computer: A type of tiny form-factor PC. Which is also called zonbox. In which there are no hard drives, fans nor any moving parts. It has been designed by zonbu company keeping ‘green pc’ in mind. Due to the absence of fans, it runs completely silently. This computer works on Linux operating system with 512MB RAM.
Sun Ray Computing: Sun Ray Computing is a thin client implementation that can perform tasks similar to desktop computers and also provide good speed for all those tasks. It works on solaris OS and linux.
